If you store or process customer data in the European Union (EU), knowing exactly where that data resides isn’t optional – it’s the law. For growing companies, meeting those requirements without friction can also be a strategic advantage. That’s why we’re excited to announce our independent region capability: enabling one-click data residency compliance directly within the Upwind Platform.

A Primer: What Is Data Residency and Why Does it Matter?

Data residency refers to the physical or geographic location where data is stored and processed. For organizations operating under European regulations, this typically means ensuring that their data remains within EU borders – or at least within jurisdictions that meet the EU’s data protection standards.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), enacted in 2018, is the EU’s sweeping  data protection law. At its core is the principle of data sovereignty: personal data is subject to the laws of the country in which it is collected and stored.

Meeting the data residency requirements of GDPR matters for several key reasons:

  • Regulatory Compliance. Non-compliance can result in steep penalties  (up to €20 million or 4% of global revenue – whichever is higher). Hosting data within the EU – with providers that ensure GDPR compliance, minimizes this risk dramatically..
  • Trust and Transparency. Customers value privacy. Storing data locally in the EU signals commitment to data protection and enhances brand credibility.
  • Latency and Performance. Proximity matters. Hosting data closer to users improves access speed and service quality.
  • Legal Clarity. EU data residency ensures coverage under a consistent legal framework – especially vital in sectors like healthcare, finance, and education, where stakes are high. .

Data Residency Compliance Inside the Upwind Platform

Upwind has always supported US data sovereignty. We developed our independent region capability to meet growing regulatory and data residency demands, particularly for EU customers concerned with GDPR. This new feature enables organizations to align with GDPR and other regional regulations with a single click, all while maintaining a consistent user experience across the Upwind Platform.

A cybersecurity dashboard shows security posture scores, runtime insight graphs, compliance status, risk findings, and alerts. Menus and icons are visible on the sidebar and header. The onboarding center progress is at 25%.
All data will now be automatically stored within a user’s backend. Here, all data is being stored within the European Union.

How to Select Your Region

During the login process, users will now automatically be assigned to a backend in their region of operation in the Upwind Platform. The Upwind console URL will remain the same, simplifying usability to automatic residency compliance.

Once a region is automatically selected, all Upwind sensors and cloud scanners tied to your organization are configured to report back to a backend in your region. This ensures that any collected data, such as detections, maps, vulnerabilities, and misconfigurations, remain fully-contained within your selected jurisdiction. No data is shared between regions, and there is no fallback to a centralized US backend. Our design ensures strict data sovereignty and enables simple and powerful regulatory alignment.
